Life of Thad Stevens
Born with a clubfoot, Thad Stevens hobbles through childhood essentially fatherless, friendless, and penniless. He comes to believe that all men, indeed, are not created equal in his early 1800's Vermont village, nor in the rest of the young United States of America. He desires but one gift to change his future, and that of his country: Education. His devoted mother finds a way.

Thad sets out on his mission: To hold the country accountable for the primary principle of the Declaration of Independence, "All men are created equal." Along the way, he seizes opportunities, makes mistakes, rejects compromise, creates enemies, conducts on the "Underground Railroad, authors amendments, and impeaches a president.
